TNT Chess Club

Last Monday, the TNT Chess Club witnessed an unforgettable clash as 95 year old Pete Potter—a true Taupō local and chess enthusiast—stepped in to challenge our top-ranked players. What followed was a thrilling display of strategy, humour, and the kind of good-natured rivalry that makes chess so special.

A Friendly (But Fierce!) Showdown,  Pete faced off against two of our strongest competitors: Immanuel Wightman (13Ng2) and Riley Parker-Ord (12Ru2)”

Despite Pete’s playful warning that he’d "go easy on his opponents," the games were intense, with all three players trading clever moves and quick wit. In the end, our two lads proved their mettle—thoroughly thrashing Pete. Yet true to his good sportsmanship, Pete loved every minute of it. So much so, in fact, that he’s already planning a rematch!

A Local Legend with Deep Ties to TNT

Pete isn’t just any chess challenger—he’s a man with a rich history in our community. A Taupō resident since 1954, he watched the original Taupō-nui-a-Tia College being built. His late wife, Maureen Potter, was a beloved local music teacher and a founding staff member of our school. The Potter family’s connection to TNT runs deep:

  • Janet Potter (alumni, 1974–76) – Musician, educator, and linguist

  • Rafe Potter (alumni, 1975–79) – Former Tauhara Engineering apprentice, now a CAD engineer

  • Brad Potter (alumni, 1978–81) – Former Power Board worker

Even the next generation of Potters have been part of our kura, with Tyler (2021–24) and Erika (Year 9, 2024) attending before moving to England earlier this year.

More Than Just a Game

While the matches were competitive, the real highlight was the camaraderie and laughter shared between players. Pete’s visit wasn’t just about chess—it was a reminder of how our school connects generations, fostering whanaungatanga (relationships) and manaakitanga (respect).

As Pete put it with a grin: "I’ll keep going easy on them… at least until I finally win!"
