Junior Assessment Guide

We have introduced a new curriculum this year for Maths & Statistics and English for years 0 - 10.  This means we are currenty changing from the old curriculum to the new curriculum.  We want to acknolwedge that we have only been using the new curriculum from the start of 2026, which includes new teaching and assessment methods and content.  For consistency, all junior curriculum areas in our school will be adapting to a more consistent reporting tool using a new system of using progress outcomes and stages of learning.

Because of this, you could see a change in your child's progress or achievement compared to previous years, which may be the result of changes to curriculum expectations for your child's level.

Teachers will use a range of evidence to inform a student's progress, including their own observations, classroom tasks, common assessment activities, tests etc.  These are all taken into consideration when reporting on the progress a student is making throughout the year.

SMART Assessment Tool 2026

This year, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College is introducing a new assessment tool for Reading, Writing and Maths.  This is called the 'SMART' tool where all year 9 and 10 students will be assessed twice a year (term 2 and term 4) to determine their progress in these 3 academic disciplines.  This is a compulsory requirement. Progress for these will be reported in term 2 and term 4.

Numeracy and Literacy Common Assessment Activity 2026/2027

The literacy and numeracy standards will help ensure that students have the foundational skills to support them in further studies, work, and life.

Year 10 - and any senior - students who are deemed 'ready to be assessed', in the relevant learning area, will be entered.

Whānau will be informed if their young person is ready to sit one or more of the following standards: reading, writing, numeracy, pāngarau or te reo matatini.
