On Sunday 17 May, a group of 4 males and 4 females competed in the Hillary Challenge North Island Regional Qualifier in the surrounds of Rotorua.
Hillary Challenge is an outdoor adventure challenge open to Y11-Y13 students regardless of experience.
It is rogaine based, involving checkpoints that the team must successfully visit on the course.
The course consists of half on foot and half on mountain bikes. The approximate total distance, depending on the team's chosen route, are 20kms on foot and 25kms by bike, with a maximum of 6 hours to find as many of the checkpoints as the team can and get to the finish on time.
The students are out in the elements on their own with only an emergency contact option.
This team came together only a couple of weeks prior to the event and performed well in a strong field finishing 16th of 31 teams. It is as much about physical ability as strategy on which checkpoints to target and problem solving. You don't have to be the fastest team nor visit all the checkpoints to win!
Congratulations to the team:
Ciana Cooper, Adrian Erasmus, Tristan Hayter, Connor Prink, Antonia Shepherd, Bianca Stewart, Elliot Turquier and Adah Williams
