During the April school holidays, Phoebe Baxter and Niah Findley attended the United Nations Aotearoa New Zealand Youth Declaration in Auckland. We are proud to note that both girls were strong applicants who won full scholarships to attend the event, which included food and accommodation costs in addition to the conference fees.
This is a 5-day conference for youth from around the motu to meet, discuss and problem-solve major issues in the country. Individuals are put into groups to discuss topics that interest them and that they believe need more support. They then work together to form an action plan that is worth considering on a governance level. For this, Niah worked on environmental challenges, including carbon- free 2050 and offshore marine oil rigging. Pheobe worked on Health issues such as teen homelessness and the medical sector. These problems and youth solutions were then presented to government officials from the House of Parliament.
It's inspiring to see our young people making their voices heard and who have a passion for the growth and development of Aotearoa New Zealand. Great work, girls!
