This Matariki weekend, while most were enjoying a well-earned rest, a fearless crew of underwater warriors from Tauhara College and Taupo-nui-a-tia College took to the pool in Auckland for the Secondary Schools Northern Underwater Hockey Championships—and what a splash they made!
This newly formed composite team was a true underdog story in the making. With three Year 9s, four players brand new to the sport, and only one player with tournament experience, they were tossed into the deep end—literally—competing in the Senior Grade (Years 11–13). Talk about a baptism by water!
But Taupō doesn’t back down from a challenge.
The tournament kicked off with a bang as the team stunned seasoned opponents Howick College with an unexpected and electrifying win. The crowd (and probably the opposition) were left wide-eyed as Taupō’s defence held strong and their teamwork shone through.
From there, the games were tight, gritty, and full of heart. The defence worked overtime, keeping scores low and spirits high. Despite facing schools with years of experience and benches full of fresh subs (some with four!), our Taupō lads had just one sub—and four players played every single game without a break. That’s not just stamina; that’s sheer determination.
By the end of the round robin, the team had earned a 5th seed—a remarkable feat in itself. Their final match was a fierce playoff for 5th and 6th place. Though they gave it everything they had, they finished 6th overall, heads held high and fins still kicking.
A special shoutout goes to Hunter Sapsford, named MVP for his rock-solid defensive play and relentless effort in keeping the opposition’s goals to a minimum. His performance was a masterclass in underwater grit.
This tournament was more than just a competition—it was a statement. Taupō is on the underwater hockey map, and this team proved that passion, perseverance, and a bit of Taupō toughness can go toe-to-toe with the best.
Underwater hockey is a growing sport in the region, and the Taupō Taniwha Club welcomes all curious swimmers to give it a go. They meet every Monday from 4:30–6:30pm at AC Baths, and all gear is provided. Who knows? You might just be the next MVP.
Ka mau te wehi, Taupō! The future of underwater hockey is looking bright—and it’s coming from the depths of the Central Plateau.
